Our Seeds are Sprouting

Sprouted Seeds

Backyard Gardening, well actually kitchen gardening this week

Last week we planted some seeds for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and cucumbers. I wrapped them up and place them on top of the refrigerator where it is warm to sprout. I keep saying I will eventually buy one of those warming mats but I still haven’t. One of these days I will just purchase one. So for now I sprout them on top of my refrigerator. 🙂

Cucumber Seeds

It has been about a week and we now have a few sprouts. We noticed quite a few cucumber sprouts in each of the pots. There is also some golden beet sprouts too. We still have yet to see any other sprouts. Our weather was good over the weekend so during the day I placed the tray of seedlings outside to get a good dose of light and then each evening I am bringing them in.

I have found it is better to get the plants outside more quickly as they don’t tend to get so leggy that way. We are hoping to get our garden beds covered soon and then I can move them into our make shift green house until I can transplant them into the garden.

Peas in the garden

We already have our peas up in the garden. It was a slow start for them as I had to plant them twice due to the birds digging up the seeds. How do those birds know where to dig? I will never know but they sure do love the pea seeds. I am hoping now that they have started to grow a bit the birds will leave them alone.

If you vegetable garden do you start with seeds or do you purchase plants each year?
