Frugal Challenge..Bread Sticks

Last week I posted my breadstick recipe I use most often. So I was wondering about how much cost difference it was between my homemade recipe and the store bought kind.

I did some shopping and found these prices:

Pillsbury Breadsticks in a can to bake $3.69 regular price. I think with coupons and sales you could get this price down to $2 each for about 10 breadsticks.

Frozen Breadsticks to bake $3.89 for 8 breadsticks.

Bread Store Breadsticks $1.19 for a dozen just brown and serve.

So the least expensive option will cost $1.19 or $.09 a breadstick. The most expensive option would be $3.89 or $.49 for each breadstick.

Each of these items above takes some time in the oven or microwave to prepare. So we assume the price of baking is the same as homemade.

Price for Homemade Breadsticks

Water $0
Margarine 3T $.16
Sugar 2T $.04
Salt 1 1/2 t $.006
Bread Flour 3c $.45
Garlic and other seasonings $.02
Yeast 2 1/4 t $.01

For a total of $.69 for 18 breadsticks or $.04 for each one.

So by making this item for a side to your meal you can save $.05 to $.45 each. If you are trying to keep your cost per meal low an option like making the breadsticks may help to do that. Besides the money savings, the homemade one are so good and make the house smell great.

What do you think?

Is it worth the effort to make these or do you think it would just be better to purchase them at the store?

  1. The homemade ones are definitely worth making, even if you don’t save too much money, because they taste a whole lot better. The only thing is that you have to plan ahead to make sure you have enough time for the dough to rise. I made some ham and bean soup last weekend and thought about making bread right before it was time to eat. If I had planned ahead, I could have made some nice rolls in my bread machine 🙂
